Getting Started at Academie Duello

There are two easy ways to get started at Academie Duello, join us for a free beginner’s class or sign-up for one of our beginner’s courses or workshops. To learn more about our ongoing programs, see the Programs Browser.

One Free Lesson

Try a free lesson nowOur Weapons Mastery, Warrior Fitness, and Youth Swordplay programs all offer one free trial class to give you an opportunity to check out our school firsthand! There’s no commitment to sign-up, so come out and enjoy this unique and exciting activity.

Pertinent details:

  • Adult trial classes are 90 minutes in length, youth trial classes are 60 minutes.
  • Comfortable clothing and a water bottle is all you need to bring.
  • You’ll be in a welcoming environment with other beginners and will also meet long-term members of the school.
  • You’ll have a great time learning a skill taught in only a few places in the world.

Beginner’s Courses

Taste of the Renaissance

Sign up nowTaste of the Renaissance is our introduction to the Weapons Mastery Program with rapier, sidesword, and longsword. This course starts at the beginning of each month and runs for eight classes.

Schedule: Mondays & Wednesdays at 7pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5pm or 7pm (for 4 weeks), Saturdays at 11:30am (for 8 weeks).
Cost: $99 +HST

Warrior Fundamentals

Sign up nowWarrior Fundamentals is our introduction to the Warrior Fitness Program with longsword, sword & shield, and spear. This course starts at the beginning of each month and runs for eight classes.

Schedule: Mondays & Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30pm (for 4 weeks), Saturdays at 10am (for 8 weeks).
Cost: $99 +HST

Beginner’s Workshops

Introduction to Archery
Learn the basics of stance and mechanics, along with a bit of history. Shooting included! See workshop schedule for dates.

Introduction to Bartitsu
The Victorian Art of Self-Defence. Grants access to the ongoing Bartitsu program. See workshop schedule for dates.

Introduction to Stage Combat
The essential skill for actors and stunt people. Grants access to our ongoing Stage Combat program. See workshop schedule for dates.

Introduction to Mounted Combat
Swordplay from horseback. Grants access to our ongoing Mounted Combat program. See workshop schedule for dates.

Give us a visit at 412 West Hastings to get a sense of everything that Academie Duello has to offer and watch any classes currently in session.

We are open from 10am to 9pm Monday to Friday, and 10am to 5pm on Saturdays. Check out our Schedule to see what’s happening during the week.

While you’re in, you can try picking up a sword or two in our store to see how it feels in your hands. Browse our collection of books or walk through our museum to learn more about the rich martial traditions on which we base our programs. Our friendly staff will be happy to inform you about our programs and answer any questions that you might have.
