Swords in Training

LA NOUVELLE REPUBLIQUE (Tours, France) 24 October 12  Grand tournoi médiéval ce week-end à Montbazon

Over 100 combattants from 15 countries came together in October for the ‘Tournoi du Faucon Noir’ in Montbazon this month.  Organised by France’s full-contact, medieval sports league, the individual winner of the tournament received a $1270-worth sword, and the various teams with high standing in this ‘nationals’ event qualify for the ‘worlds’ at the 2013 Battle of Nations.

Sword of Affection?

FREE LANCE-STAR (Fredericksburg, Virginia) 10 November 12   Union general’s sword returns to Fredericksburg for battle’s 150th anniversary (Clint Schemmer)

The prize sword of American Civil War MGen Ambrose Everett Burnside, who commanded the Union Army of the Potomac, has returned to display in Fredericksburg.

The sword was presented to Burnside in recognition of his conduct during the Battle of First Manassas in 1861 and appears in several wartime photographs and a later portrait of the general.

Of note; this sword still includes the hilt’s original metallic-threaded knot, a fragile bit of fabric that usually wouldn’t last a year in normal use.  “They are rare as hen’s teeth,” historian Frank O’Reilly said. “This was clearly a sword taken care of with love, which also speaks to the idea that it was his favorite one.”

The Pain from Spain falls mainly on … You!

АМУРПОЛИТ (Kalinin?, Russia) 18 October 12 «Осенний турнир» собирает любителей исторического фехтования

Another local WMA competition was held in Russia, continuing what the local press describe as ‘a new trend’.  Of note for things-Russian though, was that in the midst of the displays of traditional Slavic weapons, combat and wares; Russian participants had the opportunity to learn the ‘refined’ duelling techniques of "La Destreza" [Дестреза].

ЗАПОРОЖСКОЕ ВРЕМЯ (Kiev, Ukraine) 14 October 12  средневековый турнир в замке попова

Photography of the Castle Popov Tournament and demonstration.  Again, after seeing some of the impressive weapons used (the polearm from heck in particular), and NOT seeing anyone who resembles a ‘marshal/referee’; We really have to just what the safety rules are during these events!
